What's on my beach today will wash up on yours tomorrow.

The exhibition Positions is based on concrete observations in Western Norway around Stavanger.

Munk & Jerichau are curious about what meets them at selected positions by the sea to the west. With slow attention and a double gaze, they pick up what washes ashore. Colours, sand, seaweed and plastic. Focusing on selected “positions” sharpens the perception of the place.

In the project, they work with cameraless photography as a way of capturing the material they find on walks in the coastal landscape. Photograms and lumen prints render the collected objects as diffuse expressions that are scanned and enlarged into grainy films - like “dots” in the landscape. It's about being open to the unexpected. Letting the wind, sun and time control the process. The objects are transformed into screen-printed coastal landscapes.

Positions is the third in a series of projects in which Munk & Jerichau explore coastal landscapes.

From 2021-2024, they will work over several periods on a limited plot of land on the west coast of Denmark.

The result is the photogravure work series Storm and Silence - Notes from the West and A Pressurised History of Plants.
